The Positive Benefits of Listening to Music - Experience the Power of Music

Can you imagine getting through life without music? Music is such a vital and essential part of our lives. We hear music in the supermarkets, television, movies, sporting events, churches, and so many others venues. Easy going music is playing in the supermarkets – makes you more relaxed to shop more.

And can you imagine a movie without music? The music enhances and creates the mood of what you are seeing on the screen. Music has so many positive benefits and enhances our mood, emotions and yes, even our health.

Music has the power to transport you to a new level of reality. Pop in some music in the car and BOOM, you are gliding down the highway with a boost of energy. Working out? Pop in some music and enhance your work outs. Meditating? Pop in some music and transcend your meditation to higher levels. Being a musician myself, I can testify that not only by listening to music has wonderful benefits in your life, but by making music as well.

Scientist has been studying the positive benefits of listening to music for ages and to some degrees has only scratched the surface. What is this power that exists in music? It can be a mystery. But the truth of the matter is we are designed to notice the difference between noise and music. It’s very rare to find someone who does NOT like music at all. In fact, I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like music. Music comes in so many forms, styles and genres – there’s literally something for everyone to benefit.

So lets take a closer look at some of the benefits of listening to music…

Improves Mood

The Positive Benefits of Listening to Music - Experience the Power of Music

While the effects of music on our mood are not fully understood, its proven that when we listen to music to our liking, it releases a chemical called dopamine which literally improves your mood. Ever been in a gloomy mood and you heard a song that literally encouraged you, made you feel better, and pumped you up with energy? Before you knew it, you were in a great mood. That’s the power of music releasing dopamine in your body.

Reduces Stress/Lessens Anxiety

The Positive Benefits of Listening to Music - Experience the Power of Music

Billy Joel said it best, “I think music in itself is healing. It’s an explosive expression of humanity. It’s something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we’re from.”

Music can be powerful and healing in our lives. Listening to music you enjoy decreases the stress hormone cortisol in our bodies. This is done naturally. Additionally, by listening to “calming music” (generally, slow tempo, low pitch and no lyrics) has been shown to also reduce stress and lower anxiety levels.

Listening to meditation music also has the same effect.

Reduces Pain

The Positive Benefits of Listening to Music - Experience the Power of Music

Bob Marley says it best, “One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain.” The postive effects it has on the body literally can make you forget you were even in pain. In one study of patients recovering from surgery, it was proven that those who listened to music before, during and after experience less pain that those who didn’t utilize music as part of their treatment and care.

So next time you are in pain – try listening to some music. It actually just may wipe that pain away!

Strengthens Learning & Memory

The Positive Benefits of Listening to Music - Experience the Power of Music

It has been discovered that listening to music you enjoy helps you learn and recall information better. If you are a musician, then this even more increases your leaning and memory skills. Either way, however, listening to some music will help to increase this in our life. Studying for a test or exam? Listen to some classical music and you’ll find it easier to remember what you are studying.

Studies have proven that those with music lessons predicts higher IQ and academic performance.

Keeps Brain Healthy

The Positive Benefits of Listening to Music - Experience the Power of Music

As we discussed in the previous paragraph, music can help strengthen our learning and memory which ultimately helps keep our brain healthy. Studies has also shown that those who actually plays a musical instrument scored higher on cognitive tests. Ever wanted to play an instrument or sing? Go and take some lessons! Not only will you keep a healthy brain, you will experience the benefits of making music and the joy that it provides.

Making music is not just for professional musicians. Anyone can make music with some guidance and practice. It’s true that some are born with natural musical abilities, but I do believe that if you have a strong enough desire, you can accomplish anything in your life.

Improves Sleep

30% of Americans suffer from insomnia! If you are one of them, have no fear! You can improve your sleep with some calming meditative or classical music. Studies show that if you listen to this music 45 mins before going to bed, you will improve your sleep. They even have sleep headphones that you can literally listen to music all night long (I don’t have insomnia, but this is what I like to do to relax the mind and feed the subconscious while I sleep). You’ll wake up more refreshed.

So grab some Mozart or Bach and get a good nights rest!

Helps You Eat Less

The Positive Benefits of Listening to Music - Experience the Power of Music

I have known the many benefits of listening to music, but never considered that it actually helps you eat less!  I am sure you are wondering how is this possible? Well studies shown from Georgia Tech University that with soft lightening and music, it actually helps you consume fewer calories and allow you to enjoy your meal much better.

I am all about ambiance – so candles, a fire place, dim lightening, soft music. Works for me!

Makes You Happier

The Positive Benefits of Listening to Music - Experience the Power of Music

As we discovered earlier, listening to music can improve your mood. And not only that, it actually makes you happier. Imagine that? It releases that “feel-good” neurotransmitter, dopamine leaving you feeling happy, joyful and excited. So next time you need an emotional boost to experience happiness – try listening to your favorite music. I am a witness, it does the job and it does it well.

I Have a Playlist For That!

The Positive Benefits of Listening to Music - Experience the Power of Music

I am sure you are feeling good now just learning of all the wonderful benefits of listening to music can do for you. One thing I do is create a playlist for every mood on Spotify. Here are couple of my playlists that you can follow and enjoy! There are thousands of songs loaded.

These are just a “few” of my playlists. I practically have a playlist for everything. (And yes, I listen to Christmas music all year long in case you are wondering LOL)

I also have a “Feeling Good” playlist. You know when you are not even thinking about it and you suddenly hear a song and it instantly provides you a jolt of energy and positivity. The song that you yell out, “Yeah – that’s MY song!!”. I didn’t include my “Feeling Good” playlist here because these are the songs that does it for me. You can create your own.

Another idea is if you have a strong love for music, consider taking some lessons and learn an instrument. Piano? (my love and passion!) Flute? (my first instrument!) Violin? Drums? Or even taking some vocal lessons. As a musician, I can tell you that listening to music is one thing, but to actually make music – it takes your soul and body to a new level of reality.

  1. Wow, I have always enjoyed music and depending on my mood I will listen to various genres of it. If I’m working out I need something hard and fast paced. Relaxed I like softer, more subtle artists.

I never realized that it can also have an effect on learning, sleeping and eating. I am going to bookmark this to research it to find the best music for my mood.

    • Hello Jeffrey – Yes, music is such a powerful tool we can utilize in our life and you are definitely evidence of this with your working out, etc. As you now are aware, it can really assist us in many parts of our life. Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting. Continue to enjoy music 🙂

  3. As someone who has a degree in Psychology, I thoroughly agree. We really never stop and think of the power of music, and those playlists are wonderful. You inspire me to make a feel good playlist of my own. Thanks.

    • You are very welcome Melinda. Yes, music therapy is such a wonderful thing and can truly help us in our day to day lives. Awesome, yes, create those playlists for sure! I try to infuse music into every part of my life. 🙂 Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting. 🙂

  4. Omg, i never really thought that music had this many positive effects in the mind and body, we all know we like music, but then we draw a line under it and 5hink about it no more. I love this post, i need more music in my life lol!

    • Hello Ann – So glad that you found the article helpful in the fact that now you are aware of the many benefits music can offer us in our lives. We all definitely need more music in our lives. Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing. 🙂

  5. Wonderful article! Growing up I was in choir in church and chorus in school – I love to sing and I have always loved listening to music. Both of my parents are the same way – my mother a singer and my dad liked to play the guitar. As a teenager, my favorite thing to do after school was to sit in my room and listen to music. It helped ease my hormonal teenager angst lol. To this day, I always have some sort of music playing when I’m not at work. It really does bring me peace and joy and relieves my stress. I feel for those whom are deaf and can’t experience it the way we do. I know they are coming out with new technology that could change that! Do you have any suggestions for the deaf to be able to better experience music and it’s benefits? Thanks again for sharing!

    • Hello Sherry – It definitely sounds as if you have been enjoying the benefits of music your entire life. This is great and keep on enjoying and experiencing the peace and joy music can bring to one’s life. As for the deaf – what’s great about music, is that music is universal. Yes, we can feel music even if its in a different language than our own and its no different with the deaf. Music is pitch and vibrations – so for the deaf, their sense of feeling is even more heightened, so although they can’t hear the music, they can most certainly feel it as everything is energy and vibration. Hope that helps and thanks so much for stopping by and sharing. 🙂

  6. I love turning to music in virtually any situation. When at the gym, when I’m writing, and even when I’m trying to brainstorm to solve a problem. I learned a little from this article I never knew before, such as improving brain health and making one eat less. I agree that it helps improve sleep, too, though I didn’t realize it until reading this article. My own sleep has been much better since increasing my music. Thanks for the article.

    • Hello Todd – so grateful to hear that you have experienced the power of music first hand. And glad that you learned some other things that music can do for us. Keep listening to music and thanks so much for stopping by and commenting. Much appreciated. 🙂

In my opinion, music is the best medicine for every condition, and your article reinforces my belief.

  9. I haven’t met another soul who doesn’t like music. Music and I we go way back before all the gadgets and internet were popular. Remember those studying for the exam nights with the walkman? What about when you made a mixed song on the tape for your friends or loved ones?

Even now when I hear certain 80s or 90s songs, they just brought back all good old memories.

Music is still a big part of my life when I work or study or just ruduce stress (we all sing in the shower lol)

Didn’t know that music can help me eat less lol I gotta listen to it now, it’s dinner time 🙂

    Amazing post.

    cheers!

    • Yes, I often wonder if there anyone on this planet that does not like music? Would love to interview them! Oh my, yes, I remember those walkman’s and making music on cassette tapes. I still have most of mine and have been working on a project to convert them to mp3’s and upload them to the cloud for safe keepings. Lots of great memories in those tapes!

How did you enjoy dinner? 🙂

Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting. 🙂

  10. I think that this article is very interesting and helpful. I can say that music is my hobby, whatever I do, I need to listen to music. Just like you said it improves mood and it has a relaxation effect. I would definitely recommend stressful people to listen to their favorite music and it is more than enough to stay happy.

    • That’s super awesome Daniel that music is such an important part of your life. Keep on listening and thanks so much for stopping by and commenting. 🙂

  11. Can you imagine life without music? Well, for the most part, no but I’m sure I could live without it. Just like I’m sure I could live outside of society’s rules and structure. However, I listen to music while I’m writing, while I’m cleaning, when I’m sad or feeling down and sometimes while playing video games. So maybe it won’t be as easy as I think because it is still a part of my life but its something I could give up if I had too because music is already part of life, the birds, the wind, the rivers so there will always be a tune to soothe me or calm me down!

    • Hello Salvatore – You bring up a great point. We often think of music as instruments, but music is all through nature as well. The birds sing. The wind blow and create different levels of sound and the river. So nature herself utilizes music. I think this is why music is so very important to us as humans. Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting. Keep on listening to music and enjoy 🙂

  12. Nice article on the positive benefits of listening to music. A very interesting article and I find it to helpful in my day to day life because I only listen to music once in a while due to the fact that am always busy. But with the way you explain in this article I can do it even when am busy.i do like music and also will love to learn how to write a song

    • You are most welcome and so glad that you are enjoying the benefits of music. Keep on listening and thanks so much for stopping by and commenting. 🙂

  13. I was trying to answer your question – what if there’s no music?

I couldn’t even fathom the idea..

You see, I grew up with music. My parents are both musicians. We have 2 boys who play musical instruments and love music to death. Our home is full of music. I can definitely say, I live with music.

Good to know all what music brings to you.

    Thanks for your article.

    • Hello Hanna – totally agree, I can’t fathom existence without music. I am truly grateful for the gift of music. That’s so awesome that your household are practically all musicians. What instruments does your 2 boys play? My entire family on my mom’s side are all musical. Everyone can sing and/or play an instrument. So music definitely runs in my family and I definitely appreciate it that much more. Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting. Keep on listening to music and enjoy 🙂

  14. I couldn’t agree more! Music is instrumental in helping me stay calm and focused at work. The part I appreciated most about this was how you said to create your own Feeling Good playlist.

Generally, I have to avoid songs with lyrics (or lyrics I understand) in order to focus or sleep. Here is a summary of my playlists:

    – Sleep: Classical

    – Focus/Work: Heavy Metal (The Kind with Screaming that I can’t understand)

    – Driving/Workout: Hard Rock

    – Relaxing: Classic Rock

What do you think of my categories?

    Thanks!

    • Hello Nate – those are excellent play lists! What’s great about playlists is that when you create them, you are creating them based off your likes and desires for music. That is what makes music so personal and special to each person. When I need to focus and work, I tend to listen to music with no words. If they have words, I find myself listening and then gave lose focus. But when I am just doing stuff around the house, driving or something that doesn’t require concentration, then I listen to music with words. The words in songs can also be very encouraging and inspiring too. Thanks so much for commenting and stopping by. Keep on listening to music 🙂
